Mini Album Review: 9801 - WOOSEOK X KUANLIN
Earlier this year, I mentioned that a new year means new music - and that's exactly what has been happening the last two months!
A new unit debuted on March 11, 2019 - WOOSEOK X KUANLIN. For those who don't know, Wooseok is the youngest member of the K-Pop boy band PENTAGON, and Kuanlin is a former member of the project boy group which disbanded at the end of last year, Wanna One. Their mini-album is called 9801, which is a reference to their birth years - Wooseok in 1998, Kuanlin in 2001.
There are five tracks in the mini-album, with two solo tracks from each artist, and a joint track at the beginning of the album. The two solo tracks allow for both artists to showcase their individual styles, while the joint track solidifies their chemistry together. Without further ado, here are my three favorite tracks.
I'm A Star - The opener of the album is fun and fresh. It is also their debut single, and possibly the most fun to perform! I highly recommend watching the music video - it will definitely bring a smile to your face. It's quite catchy, which makes it an effective introduction to Wooseok and Kuanlin's chemistry as artists. My favorite part is in the bridge, which says, "Wooseok, Kuanlin, 9801, Woolin, Woolin."
Domino - Domino is Wooseok's solo track. When I first listened to the song, I realized - Wooseok can sing! As a member of PENTAGON, he is known for being a rapper, and not a vocalist. However, I read online that his fellow PENTAGON member mentioned that after reading the lyrics, he wanted to cry and comfort his younger brother. Wooseok also shared on a radio program that he wrote this track during a dark and difficult time for him and his band members.
Good Feeling - Good Feeling is Kuanlin's solo track. Kuanlin introduced the track as the story of his journey as an artist. It's very catchy, and his rap style is quite similar to Jackson Wang's. Kuanlin and Jackson worked on a song together as well, called Hypey, which is Kuanlin's first solo track.
